After Extra Time |

Go, Boro!
Paddy Kenny suffered the cruellest of fates as Sheffield United’s FA Cup dream came to an agonising end with a 1-0 defeat after extra-time at Middlesbrough. The goalkeeper had repelled everything the Barclays Premier League side could throw at him when, 23 minutes into extra time, in his desperation to claim Mido’s deflected shot, he helped the ball into his own net to hand Boro a quarter-final clash with Cardiff.

Liverpool defeated Middlesbrough 3-2
It was Fernando Torres ‘ turn once more to be Liverpool’s salvation as the reds, for yet another time, huffed and puffed their way around a Premiership fixture. Our suggestion to the Anfield hierachy is that the Champions League music should be played before every kick off at Anfield in order to get the players in the right frame of mind. It was Boro who scored first, after only 9 minutes, in a game which the reds needed to win in order to creep back in to 4th spot.

The game in a draw against Sheff Utd
Sheffield United and Middlesbrough will meet again on Tuesday week as their FA Cup fifth-round tie ended goalless. Blades striker James Beattie hit the post in first-half stoppage time from a free-kick, but the home side failed to turn their dominance into goals.

Fulham were beaten by Boro 0-1
Jeremie Aliadiere’s early strike proved enough for Middlesbrough to all but banish relegation fears on a day which saw the long-awaited debut of Brazilian Afonso Alves as a second half substitute. It was hardly the kind of encounter to have Barclays Premier League fans in Beijing or Dubai slavering in anticipation, but the 57th-minute arrival of Alves at least lent the afternoon some of the required global appeal.

Middlesbrough 1-0 Wigan
Jeremie Aliadiere grabbed the only goal as Middlesbrough sent an insipid Wigan Athletic side spinning into the Barclays Premier League relegation zone. The scoreline barely reflected the disparity between the two sides as Boro tore into their Riverside visitors and deserved far more than Aliadiere’s solitary 18th-minute strike. Wigan could barely contain Gareth Southgate’s side and, despite fielding new signing Marlon King alongside Marcus Bent and Emile Heskey in an attacking line-up, offered little up front.
